US health experts have warned about the possibility of a new wave of coronavirus infections and deaths as more US states begin to open.
The US death toll is nearly 90,000, with nearly 1.5 million confirmed infections, making the US the worst-affected country in the world.
The United States accounts for about 4.25% of the worlds population, but currently has about 29% of the confirmed deaths from Covid-19.
Models used by the White House suggest the coronavirus death toll could rise to around 147,000 by the month of August.
And although the overall number of new cases in the country is on the decline, in some states, the number of infections is actually on the rise.
"There are some states that are still having increasing daily number of cases; some states that are flat; some states that are going down," Dr. Tom Inglesby, director of the Center for Health Security of the Johns Hopkins University, told NBC News.
Two top officials in President Donald Trumps administration are now blaming government scientists and pre-existing health conditions to explain the countrys world-leading Covid-19 death toll.
Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro accused the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for failing coronavirus testing in the early days of the outbreak, reflecting deepening tensions between the health agency and the White House.
"Early on in this crisis, the CDC, which really had the most trusted brand around the world in this space -- really let the country down with the testing," Navarro, a trade adviser drafted into the coronavirus effort, said on NBCs "Meet the Press."
